Former MP Ronald Sapa Tlau laid to rest with full honours in Aizawl

Aizawl, May 2 (UNI) Veteran Congress leader and former Rajya Sabha MP Ronald Sapa Tlau was laid to rest on Friday following a solemn and well-attended funeral service at his residence in Zonuam locality of Aizawl.
He was 71.
Tlau passed away at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), New Delhi, at around 8 a.m. on Wednesday, following complications after undergoing bypass heart surgery.
Family members said doctors were unable to stop post-operative bleeding, which led to a massive loss of blood and a subsequent cardiac arrest.
His body was flown back to Mizoram on Thursday, where it was received at Lengpui Airport by senior leaders and workers of the Mizoram Pradesh Congress Committee (MPCC).
Condolences poured in from across the political spectrum, with leaders of all parties in the state expressing grief over his untimely demise.
Born on February 4, 1954, in Hualtu village of present-day Serchhip district, Tlau was originally named Sapliana Tlau.
During his formative years at the Adventist Training School in Jowai, Meghalaya, he stayed with Pastor Bankheads, who added “Ronald” to his name, treating him like a son. The name stuck, and he came to be widely known as Ronald Sapa Tlau.
A man of diverse talents and strong academic credentials, Tlau earned his undergraduate degree from Spicer Adventist University in Pune, and later completed a postgraduate programme in Communication for Rural Development at Howard University in Washington D.C., USA.
He was elected unopposed to the Rajya Sabha in 2014, securing 34 out of 40 votes in the Mizoram Legislative Assembly, and served a full six-year term. In recent years, he had been serving as the vice president of the MPCC and had previously held the position of chief spokesperson.
Beyond politics, Ronald Sapa Tlau was active in the media and literary circles. He hosted several TV programmes under the Zozam Television banner, authored four books, and also composed three gospel songs, reflecting his deep-rooted Christian faith and creative inclinations.
Friday’s funeral was attended by a large gathering of people from various political affiliations and walks of life, a testament to the widespread respect he commanded. The state bid farewell to a leader remembered not only for his contributions in Parliament and the Congress party, but also for his voice in public discourse and cultural life.
