Ginger exports from Mizoram hit hard as Indo-Bangladesh border closure disrupts trade

Aizawl, May 12 (UNI) The ongoing closure of the Indo-Bangladesh border, prompted by escalating India-Pakistan tensions and political instability in Bangladesh, has severely disrupted ginger exports from Mizoram, according to Starfirm’s chief executive officer, Malsawmi.
Speaking to reporters on Monday, Malsawmi said Bangladesh, being the largest importer of Indian ginger, plays a crucial role in the trade. The suspension of exports to the neighbouring country has not only posed immense challenges for exporters but has also led to a sharp decline in ginger prices across major markets.
“Since the sealing of the Indo-Bangladesh border, ginger prices have been on a continuous downward slide. Rates have plunged to Rs 28 per kilo in Delhi’s wholesale markets, while prices in Silchar and Siliguri, key hubs for Mizoram’s ginger trade, have dropped as low as Rs 17 per kilo,” she said.
The impact of this disruption extends beyond the trade sector, hitting Mizoram’s rural economy hard. Encouraged by electoral promises made by the Zoram People’s Movement (ZPM) during the 2023 state assembly elections, a large number of farmers had switched to ginger cultivation. The ruling party had pledged to provide a market support price (MSP) of Rs 50 per kilo to ginger farmers.
However, the freefall in market prices has posed significant challenges to the state government’s MSP initiative as well. According to Malsawmi, the first phase of ginger procurement under the MSP, which began on February 20, has nearly concluded with only a small quantity of produce left unsold. The situation has become more complicated with the commencement of the second phase, as fresh stocks being collected at 62 secondary collection centres (SCCs) are adding to marketing difficulties.
“The problem is compounding. With the market oversupplied and no access to the Bangladeshi market, even the MSP cannot shield farmers from the adverse effects of this crisis,” Malsawmi added.
The border closure was enforced following intelligence alerts suggesting that terror groups backed by Pakistan’s Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) could attempt infiltration into India’s northeastern states via Bangladesh. In response, security forces along the Indo-Bangladesh border have intensified vigilance, with some states opting to seal the border entirely to thwart possible infiltration attempts.
The prolonged border restrictions have now emerged as a serious bottleneck for Mizoram’s ginger farmers and exporters, who are anxiously waiting for normalcy to return.
