Group assaults woman outside mosque in Karnataka, six arrested

Davangere (Karnataka), Apr 15 (UNI) In a shocking case of group violence, a woman was brutally assaulted in full public view outside a mosque in Davangere district — an incident that came to light after a disturbing video of the attack went viral on social media, prompting swift police action and the arrest of six accused.

This was confirmed by the police in a statement issued to media on Tuesday. The victim, 38-year-old Shabinabanu Kom Jamil Ahmed alias Shamir, was beaten with iron pipes and hammers on April 9 near the Jamia Masjid in Tavarekere village of Channagiri taluk. The chilling footage showed her being attacked by a group of men while onlookers failed to intervene.

The video, which surfaced online on April 11, triggered widespread outrage and led to the identification of the victim and the location of the assault. Based on a complaint filed by Shabinabanu the same day, Channagiri Police registered a case and launched a manhunt for the perpetrators.

Within hours, six accused — Mohammad Nayaz (32), Mohammad Gauspir (45), Chandbhasha (35), Inayat Ullah (51), Dastagir (24), and Rasool TR (42), all residents of Tavarekere — were arrested for attempted murder and other offences under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).

Preliminary investigations revealed that the assault stemmed from a domestic dispute involving the victim's relative Nasreen and a man named Fayaz, which escalated after Shabinabanu's husband objected to their presence at their home and raised the issue with the local mosque committee.

Acting on his complaint, the woman and her companions were reportedly summoned to the mosque on April 9, where she was attacked in front of the congregation.

The case is being investigated under Sections 109(1), 189(2), 190(2), 191(3), 115(2), 118(1), 76, 352, 351(2), and 190 of the BNS.

The arrests were made under the direction of Davangere Superintendent of Police Uma Prashant, Additional SPs Santosh Vijay Kumar and Manjunath, Channagiri ASP Sam Varghese, and Inspector Ravish.

Police said further investigation is underway and more arrests are not ruled out.
