Guv hails Kaladan project's progress, calls for Myanmar road link to complete corridor

Aizawl, Apr 25 (UNI) Governor Lt Gen (Retd) V.K. Singh on Friday said that the Indian portion of the ambitious Kaladan Multi Modal Transit Transport Project (KMMTTP) — a key regional connectivity venture — has been completed, and urged for swift action to finish the remaining stretch in Myanmar.
Speaking at the silver jubilee celebration of Mizoram University, the Governor highlighted the significance of the project that aims to establish an alternative trade route between northeast India and the rest of the world via Myanmar. While India has fulfilled its part of the construction, the Myanmar side of the road linking Paletwa to the international border remains incomplete, posing a major hurdle to the project's operationalisation.
"The Kaladan project is critical for economic transformation of Mizoram and neighbouring northeastern states. I am hopeful that the Centre will find ways to resolve the bottlenecks on the Myanmar side," he said.
The KMMTTP envisages multimodal connectivity from Kolkata to Sittwe port in Myanmar by sea, up the Kaladan River to Paletwa, and then by road to Zorinpui on the Mizoram border. The final road segment, often referred to as the "KMMTTP road," is intended to link Paletwa with the Indian frontier, unlocking trade access to Southeast Asia.
Governor Singh also underscored Mizoram’s untapped tourism potential, noting that the state is home to six wildlife sanctuaries that could be leveraged to attract eco-tourists. "We must make determined efforts to develop the tourism industry, or else risk missing out on a vital growth sector," he cautioned.
Congratulating Mizoram University on its 25th anniversary, the Governor praised the institution’s steady rise, marked by its NAAC 'A' grade accreditation and inclusion in the top 100 under the National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF). He also lauded its ranking among the top 30 institutions by India Today.
In his address, Vice Chancellor Prof. Dibakar Chandra Deka highlighted the university’s evolution over the past two and a half decades. He noted the growing diversity of its student body, with enrolment now including candidates from other Indian states as well as international students. He added that plans are underway to introduce new academic streams including Law, Physical Education, and Sports Education to meet the evolving demands of students.
