Himachal schools to track teachers’ attendance, location via app

Shimla, April 22(UNI) To ensure discipline and improve accountability in government schools, the Himachal Pradesh Education Department is set to roll out a new digital attendance system for teachers and staff starting May 1.
Under the new system, teachers will mark their attendance through the 'Sweet Chat App' which will also capture their live location using school-issued devices.
The initiative is aimed at curbing absenteeism and ensuring timely arrival of teachers in schools across the state.
The app has been designed not only to log attendance but also monitor staff movement through GPS. If a teacher fails to mark their attendance for two consecutive days through the app, one day of leave will be deducted automatically.
Teachers on field duty or outstation assignments will be tracked as per their daily schedules. This location-governed system is expected to plug loopholes and bring greater transparency in the functioning of schools.
To reinforce a sense of professionalism, the education department has also mandated the wearing of standard uniforms in schools. This move comes after concerns were raised about teachers wearing flashy and inappropriate attire, which distracted attention from the decorum of the academic environment.
The decision comes amid broader efforts to uplift the quality of education in the state. Declining academic standards and low enrollment in government schools have been a cause for concern for the administration. In response, the government has undertaken a rationalization drive, closing down nearly 550 schools based on student strength and distance criteria to optimize resources.
Moreover, from Class 1 onwards, students in government schools will now be taught in English medium. The use of multimedia for teaching is being promoted through another digital tool called 'Vidya Samiksha Kendra App', which is helping educators adopt modern pedagogical methods.
The Sweet Chat App is a comprehensive digital platform that integrates teaching and administrative tasks. It allows real-time tracking of both student and teacher attendance, records academic progress, and logs classroom activities. In Chamba district alone, the initiative will impact over 1,600 schools, ensuring better governance and a renewed focus on quality education.
