HP suffers a loss of 500 crore rupees due to bad weather and heavy rains

Nadaun (HP), July 1(UNI) Himachal Pradesh has suffered a huge loss of five hundred crore rupees due to bad weather and heavy rains during the last forty-eight hours. This was stated by Chief Minister SS Sukhu while talking to the media today. Sukhu is on a day-long tour to his home constituency of Nadaun today.

Sukhu said that last night, there were incidents of dam burst in Mandi at eight places in the state. In the initial assessment, a loss of 500 crores has been reported. The Beas river is in spate. The body of a woman has been recovered on the banks of Beas in Nadaun. Updates of damage from some places are coming continuously, so the figure of loss may increase.

He appealed to the people of the state not to go to the banks of the river. All people should stay at a distance of about 500 meters from the rivers and drains. There is information about the members of a family being affected by the landslide. Some people have been rescued here. The Meteorological Department has issued an alert for the next 24 hours.

Appealing to tourists, Chief Minister Sukhu said that tourists should stay in urban areas and stay away from rivers, streams and inaccessible mountains. Incidents of landslides are being reported in inaccessible areas. Do not go to such areas. National highways are running smoothly in the state and the Public Works Department is constantly restoring the roads. Due to rain, the power project has suffered the most damage and work here has been affected. There has been an increase in cloudburst incidents in the last two-three years, which is worrying. The reason behind this is being reviewed.

Chief Minister Sukhwinder Singh Sukhu said that after the disaster of the year 2023, changes have been made in the TCP rules for building houses near rivers and streams. The central government should also help immediately in such a situation. He has expressed concern over the delay in project construction of NHAI .
Meanwhile, District Hamirpur has been experiencing heavy and incessant rainfall for the past 24 hours. Additionally, continuous rainfall in the higher reaches of the state and multiple cloudburst incidents have resulted in a significant volumetric increase in the water level of the Beas River.

Giving this information, the Deputy Commissioner, Amarjeet Singh said that as a consequence, the Pandoh Dam authorities started releasing volumetric water from the dam which reached to the level approximately 1,64,590 cusecs at around 3:00 AM. Due to this sudden surge, low-lying areas of Village Ballah under Gram Panchayat Kheri were inundated at approximately 5:30 AM. This led to 51 individuals, including 30 laborers and 21 local residents, becoming stranded.
Upon receiving this information, the District Disaster Management Authority (DDMA), Hamirpur immediately alerted all relevant stakeholder departments.
The local administration and police teams promptly reached the site to initiate response efforts. Being the nearest response unit, the Reserve Battalion of Police, Jungle Beri, was deployed to lead the rescue operation. Simultaneously, the SDRF team from Kangra and Home Guard personnel were also mobilized to support the rescue efforts.
The operation was conducted effectively, and all stranded individuals were successfully rescued with the active cooperation of local residents. As all the evacuated individuals had access to alternate accommodation, no relief camp was required.
In addition, as per the weather forecast, there is a likelihood of continued rainfall in the coming days. The District Disaster Management Authority, Hamirpur is closely monitoring the situation and will continue to issue alerts and advisories for public safety as needed.

The general public is strongly advised to stay away from rivers, streams, and other water bodies, and to avoid unnecessary travel, especially in vulnerable areas. All citizens are requested to exercise caution and remain alert during this period.
