Monsoon fury in Mandi: 10 dead, 34 missing amid landslides & cloudbursts

Shimla/Mandi, July 2((UNI) The death toll in Mandi district due to landslides and multiple cloudburst incidents on July 1 has risen to 10, while 34 people remain missing, according to the latest report issued by the Himachal Pradesh State Emergency Operation Centre.

The monsoon fury, which has been consistently wreaking havoc in the state for the past three years, has again brought devastation to several regions of Mandi, especially in the sub-divisions of Karsog, Thunag, Padhar and Gohar. Between June 20 and July 1, the state has reported around 90 people either killed or missing in weather-related incidents.

According to the 32-hour situation report released at 8 am on July 2, 10 deaths were confirmed from various parts of Mandi. As many as 34 people are officially reported missing; many are feared trapped under debris or washed away by flash floods. Five people have sustained injuries, and over 370 have been rescued or evacuated, with 11 still stranded.

Rescue teams from NDRF and SDRF have been deployed at Karsog, Gohar, and Thunag, where severe cloudbursts caused destruction of homes and public infrastructure.

Among the worst-affected areas are Siyanj, Gohar reported 9 people washed away, with 2 bodies recovered and 7 still missing.

Parwara and Talwara village reported two missing from a family, with one body recovered.Thunag and Pakrair areas together account for 17 missing and two deaths.

Several locations including Kutti Bypass, Old Bazaar Karsog, and Bada in Gohar also reported fatalities and multiple missing cases.

With National Highway-305 blocked, and damage reported to 24 houses, 12 cowsheds, and one hydroelectric project, the state continues to grapple with monsoon-triggered destruction. Relief operations are underway but hampered by accessibility challenges in hilly terrains.
