Hyd: KIMS hospitals performs revolutionary new non-invasive treatment to eliminate Parkinson’s tremors

Hyderabad, Apr 17 (UNI) Doctors at KIMS Hospitals here on Thursday claimed that with the help of a revolutionary new non-surgical treatment available — MR-guided Focused Ultrasound (MRgFUS), they have completely eliminated tremors linked to Parkinson’s disease -- a debilitating condition that affects a person both physically and emotionally.
Until about a year ago, the only treatment available was a surgical procedure called Deep Brain Stimulation (DBS) but thanks to medical advancements, there is now a revolutionary new non-surgical treatment available — MR-guided Focused Ultrasound (MRgFUS).
In a release here on Thursday, Doctors at KIMS Hospitals said that this technology can eliminate tremors completely within just 3 to 4 hours.
The hospital’s Movement Disorders team, including Dr Manas, Dr Jayasree, and Dr Gopal, recently organized an awareness programme to educate patients and their families about Parkinson’s, its symptoms, and new treatment options.
Around 150 people participated and had their queries addressed.
Dr Manas Kumar Panigrahi, Chief Neurosurgeon and Head of Neurosurgery, KIMS Hospital said “Parkinson’s is a progressive disorder that not only causes physical issues but also leads to severe emotional distress. Until now, medications and surgeries like DBS were the only options but with MRgFUS, no incision is needed. We use a focused ultrasound device alongside an MRI scanner to treat the affected area.”
“The best part is that the patient walks out with significantly reduced or completely eliminated tremors — all in just a few hours,” Dr Manas Kumar said and added that "We monitor improvement in real-time during the procedure and only complete it once the tremors subside.”
