Increase in BC quota to benefit poor Muslims: Amer Ali Khan

Hyderabad, Mar 18 (UNI) Congress MLC Amer Ali Khan on Tuesday strongly supported the Telangana Government’s Bill to raise Backward Classes (BC) reservations to 42 percent, calling it a historic step towards social justice.

Addressing the Telangana Legislative Council after BC Welfare Minister Ponnam Prabhakar introduced the Bill, Amer Ali Khan accused the BJP and BRS of misleading people on the issue.

He highlighted that the Congress government, under Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy’s leadership, conducted a scientific caste survey that revealed the urgent need to increase BC reservations to address educational, employment, and government service gaps.

"This is a long-overdue correction of historical injustices," Khan stated, adding that the Bill aims to uplift marginalized communities based on data-driven insights.

Clarifying concerns about Muslim BCs, Khan stressed that their existing 4 percent quota would remain separate and unaffected. "Muslim BCs have long been recognized as part of the BC category across India, and their dedicated sub-quota ensures they do not compete for general BC reservations," he explained.

Khan criticized the BJP for spreading misinformation to create divisions among BC communities and accused the BRS of failing to act on BC welfare during its ten-year rule. He pointed out that the BRS' 2014 Integrated Household Survey never translated into meaningful welfare initiatives.

"If the BRS was committed to BC welfare, why didn’t they introduce this 42 percent reservation during their tenure?" Khan questioned.

Reaffirming the Congress Party’s commitment to social justice, Khan urged Council members to support the Bill, emphasizing its role in ensuring fair representation and empowerment for BCs in Telangana.
