Kolkata, Mar 31 (UNI) India exported a total volume of 254.67 million kg of tea with value realisation of Rs 7111.43 crores during the calendar year 2024, moving up from the fourth to the third position in world tea exports, the Tea Board India said on Monday.
India pipped Sri Lanka to take the third position and captured 13.55 percent of the world market in 2024, as its exports surged to 254.67 million kg from 231.69 million kg in 2023.
Kenya and China occupied the top two slots, the Tea Board India media release said here quoting International Tea Committee (ITC) data.
The world tea exports during 2024 stood at 1,879.83 million kgs.
Among the major tea-producing countries, Kenya led by exporting 594.50 million kgs, cornering 31.63 percent of the world market.
China exported 374.1 million kilos of the beverage, grabbing 19.9 percent of the world market.
Sri Lanka, which occupied the third position in 2023, dropped one place by exporting 245.79 million kgs in 2024 for a 13.08 percent share of the world market.
During 2024, North India exported 154.81 million kg with value realisation of Rs 4833.12 crores, while South India exported 99.86 million Kg with value realisation of Rs 2,278.31 crores.
North India’s contributions stood at 60.79 percent in terms of quantity and 67.96 percent in value terms; whereas South India’s contributions was 39.21 percent in quantity terms and 32.04 percent in terms of value.
Meanwhile, Tea Board India, which is under the Union Commerce Ministry, is all set to celebrate its 72nd Foundation Day on April one.
The Tea Board, set up under Section 4 of the Tea Act 1953, was constituted on April one that year.
It has wide functions and responsibilities under the direction of the Central Government, which include, rendering assistance for cultivation, manufacture and marketing of tea, export and domestic promotion, aiding research and development activities for augmentation of tea production and improvement of tea quality, extending assistance to the plantation workers and their wards through labour welfare schemes, encouraging and assisting the unorganised small growers sector, collection and maintenance of statistical data and its publication.
