J&K medical body fast-tracks doctors' registration

Srinagar, July 3 (UNI) In a significant move to bolster healthcare services in the Union Territory, the Jammu and Kashmir Medical Council has expedited the issuance of registration certificates for allopathic doctors.
Following the mandate requiring permanent registration to practice, the Council has issued 1,688 certificates in 60 days.
In the past two months alone, the Council has issued 1,688 certificates, including permanent, provisional, and other key registrations, reflecting its commitment to applicant-friendly reforms aligned with National Medical Council (NMC) regulations. The certificates were issued to doctors trained in India and countries like Bangladesh, Kyrgyzstan, China and Iran.
“Over the last two months, 1,688 registration certificates were issued which include 542 permanent registrations, 863 provisional registrations, 132 additional qualification registrations, 111 NOCs and 40 good standing certificates,” said president, J-K State Medical Council S Muhammad Salim Khan.
In 2024, 1,295 permanent registrations, 1,557 provisional registrations, 342 additional qualification registrations, 467 NOCs and 225 good standing certificates were issued.
The initiative of the Council is aimed at ensuring care for patients from qualified and certified professionals.
Dr Khan said the registration requires meticulous verification and authentication by various issuing authorities, including boards of school education for class 10 and 12 degrees, internship completion certificates by concerned medical colleges, mark sheets and degree certificates by issuing universities.
Further, foreign medical graduates (FMGs) need verification of eligibility certificate by national medical commission, degree certificates and internship completion certificate with marks cards by concerned medical universities through respective embassies and FMG Exam score card by national board of examination (NBE).
Khan said the demand for registration has gone up significantly as all the universities concerned with MBBS courses issued final year results in May-June this year. Around a thousand interns completed their compulsory internship during same time.
Also 255 foreign medical graduates (FMGs) were selected for compulsory rotatory medical internship in various medical colleges in Jammu and Kashmir as per their merit in FMG Exam conducted by national board of examination (NBE).
Khan said the J-K Medical Council is also proposing to hire more staff to overcome the backlog in a short period of time and expedite the process of registrations. Also J-K Medical Council is contemplating digitization of records of all registered medical practitioners registered with it since the inception.
