Srinagar, Mar 15 (UNI) The J-K Peace Forum, an organization of Kashmiri Pandits, has strongly condemned the Centre’s decision to ban the Awami Action Committee (AAC) led by Kashmir’s chief cleric Mirwaiz Umar Farooq, calling it unjust and detrimental to the peace and development of Jammu and Kashmir.
Last month, Mirwaiz and Forum president Satish Mahaldar met in Delhi and agreed to form a committee to bridge the gap between Kashmiri Muslims and Pandits.
Mahaldar urged the government to review its decision, stating that Mirwaiz is a respected religious and political leader dedicated to fostering peace, reconciliation, and addressing the hardships of Kashmiris.
“This move is not only unjust but also detrimental to the peace, harmony, and development of Jammu and Kashmir, a region that has long suffered due to ongoing conflict. We call upon the Government of India to urgently review this decision and refrain from creating barriers in Dr. Mirwaiz’s crucial work for the betterment of the state and its people,” a statement by the president of J-K Peace Forum, Mahaldar read.
Last week, the Ministry of Home Affairs banned the Mirwaiz led, the Awami Action Committee, as well as the Jammu and Kashmir Ittihadul Muslimeen (JKIM) led by Mansoor Ansari.
Mahaldar highlighted Mirwaiz’s role in combating extremism, promoting interfaith dialogue, and supporting displaced Kashmiri families. Mirwaiz has long advocated for the return of Kashmiri Pandits and emphasized the need for religious tolerance and social harmony.
“He (Mirwaiz) has consistently emphasized the suffering of the community and called on the government to facilitate their safe and dignified return. His unwavering stance on this issue highlights his commitment to ensuring justice and peace for all communities in Jammu and Kashmir,” Mahaldar said.
The Forum urged the government to reconsider its decision and support leaders working towards stability, justice, and prosperity in the region.
“Banning his organization, the Awami Action Committee, is a grave injustice that undermines the region’s potential for peace and progress. We urge the Government of India to reconsider this decision. The people of Jammu and Kashmir deserve leaders who advocate for peace, education, development, human rights, and interfaith harmony. It is time for the government to support efforts that can lead to long-term stability, justice, and prosperity for the region,” he said
