J&K: Probe launched into police officer's conduct during protest in Kulgam

Srinagar, Mar 17 (UNI) The Jammu and Kashmir Police have ordered a probe into an officer's conduct during a protest over the mysterious deaths of two Gujjar youths in Kulgam, South Kashmir.

The probe will be conducted by the Deputy Inspector General of Police, south Kashmir.

The decomposed bodies of two brothers, who had been missing since February 13 along with a third person, were recovered three days apart from a stream in south Kashmir. On Sunday, locals held a protest over the mysterious deaths in Kulgam, during which a police officer allegedly misbehaved with the family members of the deceased. Later a video surfaced on social media showing a police officer kicking a woman protester.

"A video has surfaced on social media regarding a police officer's conduct with the public in Kulgam. We have taken cognisance of the yesterday's incident and the allegations regarding the officers conduct. DIG SKR will enquire and submit his findings within 10 days, "Kashmir Police Zone said in a post on X.

Peoples Conference President and legislator Sajad Lone strongly condemned the incident in Kulgam where a police officer was seen kicking female relatives of two deceased youths.

"Images of a police officer kicking the female relatives of two youths who died in Kulgam, is utterly disdainful," MLA Lone stated while adding that "The whole action reeks of contempt within the minds of those who are supposed to protect the masses."

In a statement, Lone suggested that such incidents are not isolated, emphasising, "And this is not a rare occurrence. It is almost a daily occurrence. It is just that it escapes filming."

Meanwhile, Peoples Democratic Party leader Iltija Mufti on Monday claimed the gates of her house had been locked up ahead of her visit to Kulgam. Iltija and her mother, Mehbooba Mufti, live together in a house on the outskirts of Srinagar, in the Khimber area.

“Once again the gates of our house have been locked up. Such is the high-handedness that they don’t even have the courtesy to inform us. I wanted to visit Kulgam, where the dead bodies of two young men who disappeared mysteriously were finally found. What are the authorities trying to hide here?” she asked.
