Karandlaje writes to Guv, pleads to withhold Muslim quota act

New Delhi, Mar 21 (UNI) Union Minister Shobha Karandlaje on Friday written a letter to Karnataka Governor Thaawarchand Gehlot, urging him to withhold consent to the proposed amendment to the Karnataka Transparency in Public Procurements Act.
The amendment seeks to grant a 4% reservation in government tenders and contracts to Muslims under Category 2B, which Karandlaje believes to be unconstitutional and discriminatory.
In her letter, she expressed grave concern over the bill, stating that it violates the principles of equality, non-discrimination, and equal opportunity as enshrined in the Indian Constitution.
She emphasised that the Constitution does not permit reservations based on religion and that the proposed amendment contradicts the Supreme Court’s consistent stance that affirmative action should be based on social and educational backwardness, not religious identity.
Karandlaje warned that the bill is likely to face legal challenges and judicial scrutiny, given its deviation from constitutional safeguards. She further argued that providing reservations based on religion undermines the principles of fairness, transparency, and meritocracy in public procurement, creating an unequal playing field and depriving socially and economically backward communities of equal opportunities.
The Union Minister called the proposed amendment an attempt at political appeasement and divisive politics, which could weaken the secular fabric of the nation and lead to social disharmony. She urged the Governor to seek legal opinion from constitutional experts to ensure that any legislative action aligns with the Constitution.
The BJP leader requested the Governor to withhold his consent to the amendment and safeguard the integrity of the Indian Constitution.
