Karnataka HM urges Centre to strengthen security along Indo-Bangladesh border

Bengaluru, Mar 17 (UNI) Karnataka Home Minister G Parameshwara has urged the Central Government to strengthen security along the Indo-Bangladesh border and streamline deportation procedures for illegal immigrants.
Responding to BJP MLC PH Purjar in the Karnataka Legislative Council on Monday, Parameshwara admitted that while official figures of illegal Bangladeshi immigrants have been submitted to the government, the actual numbers could be higher.
Purjar had claimed that over 15,000 illegal Bangladeshi immigrants have been residing in Vijayapura district for more than two decades.
"Even though they speak a different language and have distinct physical features, many have managed to obtain Aadhaar and Ration Cards," the BJP MLC alleged, suggesting the verification of birth and school transfer certificates to identify them.
Parameshwara, however, maintained that the issue required a central-level approach. "The Indo-Bangladesh border must be strengthened just like the Indo-Pakistan border. Illegal immigrants have spread across the country, including Karnataka, with settlements in Chikkamagaluru, Madikeri, and Udupi," he said.
The Home Minister further informed the House that 33 illegal Bangladeshi immigrants had already been deported.
He also revealed that 10 Pakistani Nationals residing in Karnataka had been identified and deported and recalled the recent drug bust in Mangaluru on March 16, where narcotics worth Rs 75 crore were seized.
Expressing concern over illegal migrants from African nations, Parameshwara pointed out a recurring pattern: "They get arrested, secure bail, and continue to reside in the country. Deportation becomes difficult in such cases. The Centre must enact laws that enable direct deportation without prolonged legal hurdles."
