Kerala: Protest march turns violent in Malappuram

Malappuram, Apr 9 (UNI) A protest march organized by the pro-youth and student wings of Jamaat-e-Islami, including the Solidarity Youth Movement and the Students Islamic Organization of India (SIO), turned violent, near Karipur Airport (Kozhikode Airport).
The demonstration was held on Tuesday to demand the repeal of recently passed Waqf (Amendment) Act by Parliament.
Police had erected barricades approximately 1.5 kilometres from the airport terminal to block the march. However, hundreds of protestors pushed through and reportedly hurled stones and bottles at the police. In response, police deployed water cannons, burst teargas shells and stun grenades to disperse the crowd around 4 pm.
