Kolkata Metro reviews green initiatives at high-level meeting

Kolkata, Apr 28 (UNI) Progress of the ongoing energy saving and efficiency improvement projects of the Metro Railway Kolkata like replacement of steel by highly conductive aluminium for the third rail were reviewed at a high level meeting here on Monday.
Additional Member (Electrification), Railway Board, Jaideep Gupta, led the review of different green initiatives during the deliberations at the railway division's headquarters Metro Rail Bhavan, an official said.
The tunnel ventilation system and environment control system for the underground section and the battery energy storage system with advanced chemical battery were also reviewed.
Replacement of steel with a highly conductive aluminium twill help to reduce the loss on the third rail in the form of heat generation by 80%.
Revamping of the tunnel ventilation system and environment control system with bi-directional fans through different modes would ensure running of ventilation system as and when required in place of current requirement of running 24x7. This will lead to savings of Rs. 20 Crore per year.
The battery energy storage system will assist Metro Railway for peak saving and absorbing regenerative energy for further use in other system during non-peak hours.

Metro Railway has already installed 4 MW solar panels till date and plans to install another 23.5 MW solar panels in the next two years.
Detailed planning has already been done by Metro Railway and clearance is awaited from the Railway Board for this mega project.
