Laos to launch digital ID cards for citizens for modernisation of public services

Vientiane, May 8 (UNI) In a major step toward digital transformation and modernisation of public services, Laos is preparing to launch modern digital identity cards for citizens across the country.
The initiative is part of the Lao government's broader strategy to build a digital government, economy, and society, which is in line with the Lao People's Revolutionary Party's modernisation vision, Lao News Agency reported on Thursday.
The Lao Ministry of Public Security is leading the project, focusing on developing digital infrastructure, strengthening IT capabilities among security personnel, and updating legal frameworks to support the new system, Xinhua reports.
According to The Laotian Times, the initiative will establish a centralised database and modern infrastructure for securely managing citizens’ personal information.
The goal is to create a robust digital identity system while strengthening the technical capabilities of the civil servants responsible for its implementation.
The digital ID card project was officially launched in July 2024 at the National Convention Center in Vientiane.
The high-profile event was attended by Lao President and Party General Secretary Thongloun Sisoulith and Vietnamese President and Communist Party General Secretary To Lam.
Both leaders, along with their respective Ministers of Public Security, signed a memorandum of understanding to jointly implement the initiative.
Once in place, the system will streamline public services and introduce advanced technologies into government operations, making everyday interactions more efficient for citizens across the country.
