Larji power project in Kullu restored

Shimla, May 18 (UNI) In a major boost to Himachal Pradesh’s power sector, the 126 MW Larji Hydroelectric Power Project in Kullu district has been fully restored and is now operational, less than two years after it was severely damaged in the catastrophic Beas River floods of July 2023.
The timely revival of the project, undertaken by the Himachal Pradesh State Electricity Board Limited (HPSEBL) has not only prevented potential revenue losses but is now set to generate additional income for the board.
Under the leadership of Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu, the state government extended significant financial support—releasing Rs 25 crore initially, followed by Rs 35 crore and Rs 185.87 crore in subsequent phases—to bring the project back on track.
The devastating flood, which struck on July 9 and 10, 2023 with a record discharge of 5,600 cumecs, surpassed the historical 1953 flood and deposited massive amounts of muck inside the turbines, rendering them non-functional. With mechanical clearing impossible, engineers and workers undertook painstaking manual efforts to remove the debris.
Chief Minister Sukhu lauded HPSEBL engineers and staff for their relentless dedication. Unit I resumed generation on January 15, 2024, and was synchronized with the power grid on May two, followed by Unit II on August nine and Unit III on January 17, 2025—marking full restoration of the facility.
To ensure the project’s resilience against future calamities, slope stabilization measures, cable nets, and rockfall barriers have been installed. Additionally, a hinged gate has been added to the Main Access Tunnel (MAT), with another under construction at the Emergency Exit Tunnel (EET), enhancing flood protection.
With all three turbines now operational, Larji is once again feeding power into the grid—reviving a critical revenue stream for the HPSEB and strengthening Himachal Pradesh’s hydroelectric portfolio.
