Livestock sector prioritised for role in state’s growth: AP CM

Vijayawada, May 14 (UNI) Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu on Wednesday said that the Animal Husbandry Department, which plays a vital role in driving Andhra Pradesh’s growth, will continue to receive top priority under his government.
Currently, the sector contributes 11.23% to the state’s Gross State Domestic Product (GSDP), a testament to its importance in the overall economy.

Speaking at the Animal Husbandry-Tech AI 2.0 Conclave held here, Naidu outlined the government's vision for livestock and poultry industries, and announced key reforms including the exemption of property and house tax on village-level dairy sheds.

"The government will streamline Central schemes online, review mobile veterinary ambulance requirements, and integrate NREGS for water supply and fodder-related work. Deputy CM Pawan Kalyan will work closely with departments to design actionable roadmaps. The state will provide solar power up to 1,000 units, introduce grass-cutting machines for women, and expand micro-irrigation to 2.5 lakh acres this year," he revealed.

The Chief Minister noted Andhra Pradesh’s impressive national rankings in the sector—first in egg production, fifth in meat production, and seventh in milk production, stating that the dairy industry is a transformative force in rural economies, with over 42 lakh families depending on livestock for their livelihoods.
The Chief Minister interacted directly with dairy farmers and shepherds to understand their income and expenditure patterns, and explored innovations in dairy, poultry, and livestock farming, especially the role of Artificial Intelligence.

Highlighting Andhra Pradesh’s growth story, Naidu stated that the state's livestock GSDP grew from Rs 43,127 crore in 2014–15 to Rs 91,633 crore by 2018–19, marking a 21% CAGR during the TDP government’s tenure.

"However, the growth rate declined to 11% between 2019–24. In 2024–25, the livestock sector earned Rs 1.69 lakh crore in revenue. The target for 2025–26 is set at Rs 1.95 lakh crore. The dairy development significantly helped double farmers' incomes during the previous TDP regime," he observed and reaffirmed his government’s commitment to reviving the sector for inclusive growth.

The Chief Minister underlined the need to promote high-value horticulture crops, which bring higher returns compared to traditional farming. Horticulture on 18 lakh hectares currently generates Rs 1.55 lakh crore, while agriculture across 50 lakh hectares brings in Rs 55,000 crore.
