Maha; Anti-Child Marriage Squads on Alert mode in CS district

Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar, Apr 28 (UNI) Maharashtra's Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar district administration has alerted government agencies at the district, taluka and village levels to prevent child marriages on the auspicious occasion of Akshaya Tritiya on April 30, a top official said on Monday
Collector and magistrate Dileep Swami said many marriages take place on this auspicious day. The possibility of child marriage cannot be ruled out. For this, he has ordered the government agencies at the district, taluka and village levels to be alert.
In an official press release, the collector said considering the prevalence of child marriage in Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar district, a District Action Team has been formed to eliminate the practice.
The action team has prepared an action plan, and work to prevent child marriage is underway in the district on a large scale in coordination with all the departments concerned.
A total of 88 child marriages have been stopped by this action team from April 1, 2024 till date. Four cases have been registered.
As per the directions of the National Commission for Protection of Child Rights, New Delhi, various awareness campaigns are being conducted in the district to create awareness among the general public about the Child Marriage Prohibition Act, 2006 and to ensure that children are not deprived of their rights at a young age.
According to the Child Marriage Prohibition Act, 2006, if a girl is married when she is under 18 years of age and the boy is under 21 years of age, such a marriage is considered a child marriage. If such a marriage is done, the organizer is liable to a fine of one lakh rupees and imprisonment for up to two years, or both.
If any child marriage is taking place or is about to take place anywhere in the district, citizens should call the Child Help Line 1098 and 112 to report such information, the release added.
