Maha: Govt issues guidelines for electric bike taxi

Mumbai, Apr 24 (UNI) The Maharashtra government has issued a set of guidelines for electric bike taxi services in the urban areas of the state, officials said here on Thursday.
According to the guidelines, these bike taxi services can operate in the state and only electric two-wheelers (e-bikes) will be permitted under this policy to be run as bike taxis.
The maximum travel per trip has been limited to 15 kilometres while the fare will be determined by the
respective Regional Transport Authorities and a physical separator is mandatory on the seat according to the guidelines.
The guidelines include wearing helmets, following traffic laws, maintaining e-bike and understanding battery safety, proper use of the pedal-assist system and throttle, as well as awareness of local regulations regarding e-bikes.
The state Home Department has established clear eligibility and operational rules for aggregators and riders.
State Transport Minister Pratap Sarnaik had earlier announced that the government will give a subsidy of Rs 10,000 to children of registered autorickshaw and taxi drivers so that they can obtain e-bike taxi permits.
The new policy allows bike taxis to operate in all cities across Maharashtra with a population of one lakh and above, provided they use fully electric vehicles.
Aimed at promoting eco-friendly transportation, the framework stipulates that all drivers must be over 20 years of age and may only carry one passenger per ride. Children under 12 years of age are prohibited from using the service.
