Mamata parries queries on Maharashtra violence, says she hates communal violence

Kolkata, Mar 20 (UNI) West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Thursday sidestepped media queries on the current disturbances in Maharashtra but said communal violence was "condemnable".
"Ask (Shiv Sena UBT chief) Uddhav Thackeray," Banerjee said when mediapersons asked for her comment on the issue.
"Any violence is condemnable, especially the communal one," Banerjee said when asked about the recent Nagpur violence during a media conference at the state secretariat Nabanna.
She said when the anti-Sikh riot flared up she went to the (erstwhile Bengal secretariat) Writer's Buildings and offered her support to end the violence.
On the farmers' movement in Punjab, she, however, suggested a dialogue with the agitating farmers, saying bulldozing and repression would not solve the problem.
The farmers should have some opportunity to speak on their grievances for an amicable redressal, Banerjee opined.
Slamming her critics at home, the Chief Minister accused the opposition parties of tarnishing the image of Bengal regarding her upcoming visit to the UK and speech at the Oxford University.
She said the people must know that while Maharashtra is India's financial capital, Bengal is the country's cultural capital.
Banerjee said whenever someone goes outside India, he or she must be respected as they represent the country.
She said her opponents even e-mailed to enquire about the purpose of her visit to the UK and circulated defamatory remarks.
"They will be given a befitting reply by the people of Bengal as they have been getting for many years," Banerjee said.
She accused the left-wing, ultra-left-wing factions, and communal forces of working together against her government.
She reiterated that violence has no place in Bengal. “The only answer is the people’s verdict.” she added. UNI PC BD SSP
