Meghalaya police nabs NEHUSU chief for assaulting assistant professor

Shillong, Apr 28 (UNI) Meghalaya Police on Monday arrested North Eastern Hill University Students’ Union (NEHUSU) President, Sandy Sohtun for allegedly assaulting an Assistant Professor of the University.
Sohtun has been taken into police custody after an FIR was filed by the victim Alok Singh, who is an Assistant Professor of the Hindi department of NEHU, Vivek Syiem, the district police chief of East Khasi Hills, said.
In his FIR, Singh had accused the President of NEHUSU and five others accomplices for brutally assaulting him inside his office on April 24.
He further alleged that the attackers physically assaulted him and threatened to kill him by holding a scissor to his neck.
Syiem said an investigation has been launched and all the others allegedly involved in the assault would also be arrested.
Sohtun was produced before a local court and sent to seven days' judicial custody.
Following the arrest of NEHUSU President, students at the university protested against the deployment of police forces inside the NEHU campus.
They demanded the district magistrates to immediately direct all police forces to leave the campus.
“We don’t want state police and central armed police force inside our (NEHU) campus. We want them to leave our university and station anywhere,” the students said.
