Meghalaya: Poor internet connectivity hit trade activity in Dawki land port

Shillong, June 19 (UNI) India-Bangladesh trade, through the Dawki Land Custom Station in Meghalaya has been affected due to disruption of internet connectivity.
“We are unable to conduct trade for the past four days after internet connectivity snapped thus affecting the functioning of Electronic Data Interchange (EDI) system at the Dawki LCS,” an official told UNI on condition of anonymity on Thursday.
The state-owned Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL), which is the sole internet service provider to LCS, said that internet service has been disrupted after underground cables were damaged due to the road construction.
EDI is a digital system aims to enhance trade efficiency and facilitate smoother customs clearances by enabling electronic exchange of trade documents.
Most of the trade is conducted online at the LCSs through the EDI in terms of filling of bills of entry (imports,) shipping bills (exports,) customs clearance, duty payment, release orders / e-gate pass etc.
The central government allows only the public sector PSU, BSNL to provide services at the LCS. There are no alternative service providers for the LCSs.
“Without the internet connectivity all these processes come to a standstill and virtually no trade can be conducted,” the official said.
Indian traders at Dawki said the central government should also allow offline mode of trade.
“The central government should allow manual entry of the documents during such a crisis or else allow other service providers at the LCSs, so that such disruptions don’t have any impact on trade,” Dolly Khonglah of Meghalaya International Exporters Chamber of Commerce (MIECC) said.
Dawki is an important LCS with Bangladesh in the region and on any given day trade worth crores of rupees is undertaken.
Union Minister for Finance and Corporate Affairs, Nirmala Sitharaman inaugurated the EDI Service Centre at Dawki in February 2024, as part of the broader initiative to implement EDI across various Land Custom Stations in the North Eastern states.
