Mizoram border district issues strict guidelines for Myanmar refugees

Aizawl, Apr 2 (UNI) Authorities in south Mizoram’s Lawngtlai district, along with paramilitary personnel, state police, and civil society leaders, visited the refugee camp at Bualpui NG
village and issued a set of directives for the displaced people from Myanmar.
The visit came in the wake of a recent drug bust in the village, where 56,000 methamphetamine tablets were seized. Officials expressed concerns over drug trafficking networks exploiting the refugee crisis to smuggle contraband into Mizoram.
During a meeting with the refugees on Monday, authorities warned against any involvement in illegal activities and stressed the need to uphold the law.
The refugees were instructed to seek permission from the secretary of the joint village council (VC) of Bualpui NG-1 and Bualpui NG-2 before leaving the village and to report their return. Those intending to rent houses must notify both the VC and the local Young Lai Association (YLA) unit.
Additionally, any refugee owning a Chinese-made ‘Kenbo’ motorcycle was directed to restrict its movement within the village. Kenbo bikes, widely used in villages along the Mizoram-Myanmar border, are registered by respective VCs as they do not qualify for state transport registration.
Authorities also mandated that any refugee hosting a guest must report the visitor’s identity, purpose of visit, and duration of stay to the joint VC.
Bualpui NG village currently shelters around 100 refugees from Myanmar.
