Mizoram district administrator urges coordinated effort to prevent illegal migrants

Aizawl, Apr 2 (UNI) Lunglei Deputy Commissioner Navneet Mann has called for a concerted effort by village councils and civil society groups to prevent refugees and illegal migrants from Myanmar and Bangladesh from acquiring documents meant exclusively for Indian citizens.
Speaking at a meeting on Wednesday attended by officials of the district administration, representatives of the Lunglei District Village Council (VC)/Local Council (LC) Association, and the Lunglei Sub-Headquarters Young Mizo Association (YMA), Mann stressed the need for a systematic approach to curb the issuance of voter ID cards, Aadhaar cards, birth certificates, and ration cards to non-citizens.
She pointed out that some refugees and illegal migrants have attempted to obtain such documents, warning that granting them Indian citizenship papers would deprive genuine citizens of their rightful entitlements.
The meeting deliberated on measures to prevent local authorities such as VCs, LCs, and YMA units from issuing permanent residential certificates to ineligible individuals. It also discussed strategies to identify and nullify any fraudulently acquired identity documents.
Additionally, a decision was made to raise public awareness against the misuse of local residents’ names for property transactions involving refugees and migrants, including the purchase of land, buildings, vehicles, and other assets.
District officials informed that all refugees in the district had already been profiled, and temporary identity cards have been issued to identify them as refugees. As of April, Lunglei district is home to 1,971 refugees from Myanmar and 63 from Bangladesh.
