Mizoram spent Rs. 46.40 crore from disaster relief fund for Cyclone Remal recovery

Aizawl, Mar 17 (UNI) The Mizoram government utilised Rs. 46.40 crore from the State Disaster Response Fund (SDRF) to mitigate damage, repair infrastructure, and provide relief following the devastation caused by Cyclone Remal on May 27-28 last year, officials from the Disaster Management & Rehabilitation Department said on Monday.
According to officials, over Rs. 5.17 crore was allocated to district disaster management authorities (DDMAs) as financial assistance for damaged houses, while Rs. 1.80 crore was sanctioned for debris clearance. The remaining funds were distributed among nine government departments to restore essential services and infrastructure.
The Power & Electricity Department received the highest allocation of Rs. 10.20 crore to repair damaged transmission lines, replace uprooted electric poles, and restore hydroelectric plants affected by the cyclone.
The Public Works Department (PWD) and Public Health Engineering (PHE) Department were allotted Rs. 13.02 crore and Rs. 4.27 crore, respectively, for rebuilding roads, landslide-hit structures, and restoring water supply systems. The School Education Department received Rs. 3.79 crore to repair damaged schools and office buildings.
Other departments, including Irrigation & Water Resources, Horticulture, Agriculture, Health & Family Welfare, and Fisheries, also received funds to address sector-specific damages.
Cyclone Remal left a trail of destruction across Mizoram, claiming 34 lives in various localities within Aizawl Municipal Corporation, including Melthum, Hlimen, and Salem Veng, as well as villages like Falkawn, Lungsei, Kelsih, and Aibawk in southern Aizawl district. The calamity caused extensive damage to public and private properties, with landslides and heavy rainfall worsening the impact.
