Narayan Health achieves longest CAR T-cell remission in South India

Bengaluru, June 18 (UNI) In a landmark achievement in cancer care, three patients treated with Chimeric Antigen Receptor T-cell (CAR T-cell) therapy for relapsed follicular lymphoma at Narayana Health City, Bengaluru, have completed three years of remission, making this one of the longest-documented survivals post-CAR T therapy in South India.
CAR T-cell therapy, an advanced form of immunotherapy, is rapidly becoming a beacon of hope for patients with relapsed or treatment-resistant lymphoma. India now manufactures CAR T-cell products domestically, with two CDSCO-approved therapies—NEXCAR19 and QARTEMI—bringing this life-saving innovation within reach of Indian patients.
One such patient, a 66-year-old homemaker, relapsed with aggressive lymphoma in 2022 and received CAR T therapy in March 2023. She is now in complete remission and leading a normal life with her grandchildren.
Another survivor, a 43-year-old Bengaluru resident, was diagnosed during the COVID-19 pandemic and underwent CAR T-cell therapy in November 2022 after failing conventional treatments.
Despite serious complications, including a COVID-19 infection and swine flu during a Hajj pilgrimage, he is currently in remission and has completed nearly three years of follow-up.
India sees more than 1.4 million new cancer cases annually, with lymphomas contributing significantly to the burden of haematological malignancies. While many benefit from standard treatments, relapsed and resistant cases often face bleak prognoses, with five-year survival rates dipping to as low as 20–30 percent.
The success of therapies such as NEXCAR19 and QARTEMI marks a turning point for Indian oncology, reducing reliance on expensive overseas treatment and offering new hope for long-term survival.
“These cases reflect the transformative potential of CAR T-cell therapy for patients who have exhausted all other options. With CDSCO-approved therapies now available in India, patients need not travel abroad for advanced care,” said Dr Sharat Damodar, Senior Consultant Haematologist and Head of Adult BMT, Narayana Health City, and Chairman of the Oncology Collegium at Narayana Health.
Dr Devi Prasad Shetty, Chairman and Founder of Narayana Health, added, “We have always believed that the best of global innovation must be accessible to every Indian. Our commitment to pioneering technologies like CAR T-cell therapy ensures that world-class care remains both affordable and available.”
