Aizawl, May 1 (UNI) Chairperson of the National Commission for Scheduled Tribes (NCST), Antar Singh Arya, along with fellow commission members Nirupam Chakma, Dr Asha Lakra and Jatothu Hussain, met Mizoram Governor Lt Gen (retired) Vijay Kumar Singh and Chief Minister Lalduhoma on Thursday as part of their ongoing four-day tour of the state.
During their meeting at the Raj Bhavan, Governor Singh highlighted the importance of tailored welfare and development policies in a state like Mizoram, where the population predominantly comprises Scheduled Tribes.
He lauded the NCST’s proactive engagement in understanding the unique challenges faced by tribal communities in the state, expressing appreciation for its role in safeguarding their rights and promoting inclusive development.
"The Commission’s commitment to ground-level assessment is essential for driving effective policies," the Governor noted, affirming the Centre’s and the state's shared goals in empowering tribal populations.
Later, at a separate meeting held at the Chief Minister’s conference hall, Lalduhoma welcomed the NCST team and acknowledged the significance of their visit.
He thanked the Commission for its continued interest in Mizoram’s welfare and expressed optimism that their interaction with officials and visits to the three autonomous district councils (ADCs) would contribute meaningfully to the state’s development efforts.
“We are grateful for the Commission’s on-the-ground review and hope their insights and support will help advance the welfare of our people,” the Chief Minister said.
The NCST team, in turn, commended the state government’s initiatives in uplifting Scheduled Tribes and assured continued support in areas that require attention or assistance.
The visit included a comprehensive review meeting in Aizawl on Wednesday, where senior state officials briefed the Commission on the status of various welfare schemes and safeguards for Scheduled Tribes.
Earlier on Tuesday, the delegation travelled to the Mara, Lai and Chakma Autonomous District Councils to assess implementation of tribal development programmes at the grassroots level.
