Need to expand India's representation at the Oscars: Experts

Mumbai, May 2 (UNI) There is a need to expand India's representation in the Oscar awards, as it is difficult to do justice to the entire country with a single entry, experts said here on Friday.
Currently, films are being produced in more than 35 languages in India, but due to the rules for sending films only one movie is selected for the coveted award show, thereby depriving regional films of this opportunity, the experts said during a discussion session on the topic India's Reach to Oscars organised at the WAVES-2025 Summit
Chalve Gowda, A. Sreekar Prasad and Ujjwal Nirgudkar participated in the session on the second day of the summit.
"Films are made in more than 35 languages in India. Therefore, it is difficult to represent India with just one entry. So there is a need to ensure we have more entries in the awards," said Gowda.
He said the cost of promotional campaigns for the Oscars is also a big hurdle. It costs Rs 30 to 40 lakh for the primary campaign, while Rs 5 to 8 crore was spent for the big campaign of the film RRR. Also, many quality films cannot participate in the competition due to the lack of knowledge of the eligibility criteria among the filmmakers.
Therefore, the government should organise workshops for such film competitions and disseminate information.
A. Sreekar Prasad raised important issues regarding the Oscar nomination process. According to him, for small producers, the only option is an official entry through the government. It is impossible for them to independently fulfill the eligibility criteria and bear the expenses of promotion and publicity.
Today, many films with quality content lag behind due to lack of funds. Therefore, if the government or other organisations provide a platform for promotion, the producers will be able to directly contact publicity experts. Films that meet the eligibility criteria should be given top priority.
Stating that the nature of the content is also important to attract a global audience, Prasad said stories based on social sentiments, human values and universal emotions are more effective.
He also said there has been a big change in the audience and scope of films in the last few years. UNI VKB SSP
