TSGENCO signs MoU with HP Govt for Hydropower projects

Hyderabad, Mar 29 (UNI) In a major step toward strengthening Telangana’s renewable energy capacity, the Telangana State Power Generation Corporation (TSGENCO) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Government of Himachal Pradesh on Saturday for the development of two major hydropower projects to supply power to Telangana.

The MoU was signed in the presence of Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu and Telangana Deputy Chief Minister Bhatti Vikramarka Mallu.

This agreement marks a strategic collaboration between the two states, leveraging Himachal Pradesh’s rich hydropower potential and Telangana’s commitment to sustainable energy solutions.

Under this partnership, two hydropower projects – Seli (400MW) and Meyar (120MW) – will be developed to meet Telangana’s increasing demand for clean energy and ensure long-term energy security, an official statement said.

Speaking at the signing ceremony in Shimla, Bhatti Vikramarka Mallu emphasised the state’s commitment to energy security. He stated that the Telangana government is dedicated to ensuring energy security, considering the state’s fast-growing power demand.

In line with Telangana’s Clean & Green Energy Policy 2025, the MoU reflects the government’s commitment to diversifying the energy portfolio while ensuring environmental sustainability.

He further added that by partnering with Himachal Pradesh, Telangana is taking a significant step toward securing cleaner, greener, and more reliable power for the future.

Hydropower is considered one of the most reliable sources of renewable energy.Unlike thermal power, which has high and increasing production costs, hydropower has a lower variable cost and becomes more cost-effective over time. Himachal Pradesh, blessed with perennial Himalayan rivers, can generate hydropower for 9-10 months a year, compared to the limited hydropower generation period in South Indian rivers.

With this MoU, Telangana aims to utilize this natural resource efficiently to provide affordable, reliable, and green energy to its people. The Telangana State Power Generation Corporation (TSGENCO) has been assigned these projects on a nomination basis.

The Government of Telangana has been actively working to increase its renewable energy share, and this agreement highlights the importance of inter-state cooperation in India’s energy sector.

The MoU signing ceremony was attended by Sandeep Sultania, Principal Secretary, Energy & CMD, TSGENCO; Musharraf Faruqui, IAS, CMD, TGSPDCL; Sachidanand, Director, Hydel, TSGENCO; Prabodh Saxena, Chief Secretary, Himachal Pradesh; Rakesh Kanwar, Secretary, Power, Government of Himachal Pradesh; Rakesh Prajapati, Director, Energy, Himachal Pradesh; and Arindam Chaudhary, Special Secretary, Energy, Himachal Pradesh.
