Arunachal: FTI students on indefinite academic halt over unsafe conditions, unmet promises

Itanagar, May 20 (UNI) Students of the Film and Television Institute (FTI), Arunachal Pradesh have launched an indefinite academic strike from May 15, citing “continued neglect, unsafe living conditions, and broken administrative promises”.
As the first batch of students at the newly established national-level institute, they allege they have been left to navigate a campus that lacks even the most basic infrastructure, despite being under the Ministry of Information & Broadcasting.
The students stated that this decision has not been taken lightly. It follows months of sustained administrative apathy, repeated appeals, written assurances and a previous academic halt in March 2025—after which a formal meeting was held and specific commitments were made by the administration.
However, they claim no tangible progress has been made on issues ranging from clean drinking water, 24/7 power supply to internet access and campus safety.
The promised completion of key academic infrastructure such as the Classroom Theatre (CRT) and post-production blocks has not materialized, they claimed, adding that students continue to fall sick due to unsafe water, face frequent internet blackouts and attend classes in unsafe or unfinished spaces.
“We demand the immediate completion of essential infrastructure, functional academic spaces, safe drinking water, uninterrupted electricity and formal accountability from the administration. We will not resume academic activities until our basic rights as students of a national institution are fulfilled, not merely promised.”
The students have also listed specific conditions for resuming their second semester, including the operationalization of the Preview Theatre, Shooting Floor, Sound & Digital Blocks, and the Library.
“We are tired of repeating ourselves,” the students asserted. “We left our homes and cities to pursue a dream—only to be met with neglect and mismanagement. We will not resume academic activities until our basic rights as students of a national institute are fulfilled.”
The situation has drawn attention within academic and students' rights circles, with calls for urgent intervention by the Ministry of Information & Broadcasting and the state authorities. As the halt continues, the spotlight remains firmly on the need for accountability and action to restore student trust and academic normalcy at FTI Arunachal Pradesh.
