Nitish reviews flood preparedness in Bihar

Patna, May 20 (UNI) Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar on Tuesday reviewed the administrative preparedness to meet the challenges of floods in the state ahead of the monsoon season.
During the review meeting, the CM directed the officials concerned to remain prepared with all possible measures to face the challenges of floods, which could affect the state.
The state government has been extending all assistance to flood affected victims and also farmers affected by droughts, he added.
"Standard Operating Procedure (SoP) has already been prepared long back and it should be strictly followed during the floods," the Chief Minister said, adding that floods and droughts were not handled during the RJD regime before 2005.
The Standard Operating Procedure and other instructions issued to provide assistance to victims should be complied with at any cost, he added.
"All district magistrates and field officers should go to their respective jurisdictions to assess the situation by directly interacting with people," the Chief Minister said, adding that preparedness should be made accordingly. All embankments should be repaired to ensure that no embankment could breach due to heavy pressure of water," he added.
"Farmers would also be given assistance if drought affected in their areas," Kumar said, adding that adequate arrangements for drinking water should be made available to people in drought-affected areas.
"All roads should also be repaired and flood protection arrangements be made by the end of this month itself," the Chief Minister said, adding that Minister-in-Charge of districts concerned should also hold meetings to monitor preparedness to meet challenges during floods and droughts in the state.
Under no circumstances will any slackness on the part of officials to provide relief to victims be tolerated at all, he added.
