MZU commemorates birth anniversaries of Ambedkar and Phule

Aizawl, Apr 14 (UNI) Mizoram University, in association with its NSS unit, on Monday observed the birth anniversaries of Dr. B.R. Ambedkar and Mahatma Jyotirao Phule with a commemorative event that celebrated their enduring legacies and contributions to social reform and justice in India.
The event opened with floral tributes to the two social reformers, followed by a welcome address from Dr. T. Rajesh and a programme introduction by Dr. S. L. Jangu.
Serving as the chief guest, Ashish Modak, Director of the Khadi and Village Industries Commission, Aizawl, delivered a keynote address that traced the struggles and transformative ideas of both Dr. Ambedkar and Mahatma Phule. Modak described Ambedkar as the “architect of modern India” for his pivotal role in drafting the Constitution, and referred to Phule as the “father of modern India,” highlighting the philosophical parallels between Phule's work and the ideas of Antonio Gramsci.
Dr. Deepika K. from IIMC-Aizawl shared insights into Dr. Ambedkar’s contributions to women’s rights and gender justice, capturing his legacy through an evocative poem. Meanwhile, Dr. Lallianchhunga of the Political Science Department observed that Dr. Ambedkar’s global recognition is rooted in his foundational role in constitutional democracy. He underscored the significance of provisions for Autonomous District Councils in the Constitution as part of Ambedkar’s inclusive vision.
Dr. Awadesh Kumar, Professor of Botany, reflected on Ambedkar’s ideals of liberty, justice, equality, and fraternity, asserting that these values remain especially pertinent in contemporary society. Reinforcing this, Dr. Sushma Kumari from the Hindi Department quoted Ambedkar’s assertion that political liberty is meaningless without social liberty. She also emphasised education as a tool for empowerment, particularly for marginalised communities.
Chairing the session, Prof. Kishor Gaikwad concluded the event by calling Dr. Ambedkar a “symbol of knowledge,” citing the numerous statues erected in his honour around the world. He clarified that Phule’s Satyashodhak Samaj was not a religious sect but a progressive social movement rooted in modern ideals. He also remarked that caste should be viewed not just as a socio-cultural phenomenon but also as an economic structure that reinforces inequality.
The programme also featured a presentation by Gautam Makwana, a PhD scholar in Social Work and a Florida resident, who spoke on anti-discrimination laws and caste-based bias within the US tech industry.
Further reflections were offered by Prof. K.V. Reddy, who noted Dr. Ambedkar’s advocacy for all communities, and Prof. Kottu Sekhar, who highlighted his commitment to caste abolition and women’s liberation. Short speeches were also delivered by Dr. Bidu Kanti Das, Dr. Lama, Dr. Chetna Kumari, and Prem Chhetri.
The programme concluded with a vote of thanks by Dr. V.D. Ambeth Kumar, who expressed gratitude to the chief guest, guest speakers, and attendees, as well as to the university authorities for their support in organising the event.
