Dol Purnima being celebrated in West Bengal

Kolkata, Mar 14 (UNI) Dol Purnima, also known as Dolyatra (colour of festival) was being celebrated all over West Bengal on Friday as the people wearing colourful dresses were out on the streets and
predetermined places to exchange greetings and throw Abir to each other in jubilant mood.
Devotees also thronged to the various religious places like Dakshineswar and Kalighat to offer prayer before the Goddess of Kali, and elsewhere the revellers in hundreds and thousands joined in celebration at Belur Match in Howrah, Mayapur, Nabadwip in Nadia district and Sonajhuri
Haat in Birbhum district.
There had been no report of any untoward incident as the Kolkata Police and their counterpart of West Bengal Police have been vigilant to ensure peaceful celebration.
WB Police in a post said there was no restriction at Sonajhuri Haat in relation to the holi festival and the authorities restricted vehicular traffic around the area so that people can have free movement in celebrating the festival.
Sources said around 500 uniformed personnel have been deployed in and around Sonajhuri Haat, near Santiniketan in Bolpur, to ensure Nawadwip, the birthplace of Lord Chaitanna, and nearby Mayapur, the headquarters of ISKCON were special attractions for the revellers
as well as the Belur Math, the headquarters of Ramakrishna Mission.
Dol Purnima or Doljatra, a vibrant festival dedicated to Lord Krishna and Radha, and it welcomes the spring season and is celebrated on the full moon day of the Phalguna month.
Dolyatra has an added significance in Bengal and Bengalis as it marks the birthday of Chaitanya Mahaprabhu, a 16th-century Vaishnava saint.
Both the state and the Central government declared holiday and vehicular traffic off the road during the day.
