Aizawl simulates wartime emergency in nationwide civil defence drill

Aizawl, May 7 (UNI) A large-scale emergency preparedness exercise simulating wartime scenarios such as air raids, power outages, and civilian evacuations was carried out in Aizawl on Wednesday, in synchrony with 243 civil defence districts across the country.
The mock drill took place between Akashvani Aizawl at Tuikhuahtlang and the Aizawl Civil Hospital in Dawrpui, with the air raid siren blaring from the Deputy Commissioner’s Office at Treasury Square precisely at 11 a.m. As part of the exercise, key installations including the Akashvani rooftop and the city’s main water reservoir were camouflaged with foliage to mimic measures taken to conceal them from enemy aircraft.
According to Zoramsiama Hmar, Additional Deputy Commissioner of Aizawl district, the simulation involved coordinated efforts from civil defence search and rescue units, medical teams, the Police and NCC cadets. The cadets assisted the Police in clearing vehicular traffic along the drill route and evacuating mock casualties from the Akashvani premises to the civil hospital.
Hospitals across Aizawl had been alerted ahead of the exercise to ensure the availability of intensive care units and backup power in anticipation of a simulated blackout.
The day’s preparedness test culminated in a five-minute citywide blackout at 6:30 p.m., during which all vehicles came to a halt and switched off their headlights to simulate conditions during a real air raid.
Authorities said the exercise aimed to test the city’s readiness and inter-agency coordination in the event of large-scale emergencies or hostile attacks.
