Suraj welcomes Apex Court's verdict lifting stay on University appointments in Odisha

Bhubaneswar, May 8 (UNI) Odisha Higher Education Minister Suryabanshi Suraj on Thursday welcomed the Supreme Court’s decision to lift the stay on appointments of Vice Chancellors and faculty members in universities across the state.
The interim stay was related to the Odisha University (Amendment) Act, 2020.
While hearing the case, the Supreme Court ruled to lift the order, thereby allowing appointments to proceed in accordance with the newly introduced Odisha University (Amendment) Act, 2024, official sources confirmed.
Minister Suraj stated that the verdict validates the concerns raised about the Odisha University (Amendment) Act, 2020, which was introduced by the previous government. He said it was flawed and violated the University Grants Commission (UGC) regulations.
With the stay now lifted, the appointment process for Vice Chancellors and faculty members can resume under the framework of the 2024 Amendment Act.
The Minister assured that prompt steps will be taken to fill vacant posts.
Suraj further remarked that the judgement corrects a historical misstep by the previous administration, which had caused stagnation in higher education recruitment.
He reiterated the government’s commitment to the holistic development of education in Odisha. The new amendment, he said, aligns with UGC guidelines and aims to strengthen the state's higher education system.
The minister highlighted that after an all-night discussion in the State Assembly, the bill was passed and subsequently received the Governor’s assent, culminating in the enactment of the new law. He called this a "new dawn" for higher education in Odisha.
Going forward, the government will prioritise university autonomy, the preservation of academic culture, and the acceleration of the recruitment process.
Suraj concluded by stating that the Odisha University (Amendment) Act, 2024, will be a landmark step in transforming and strengthening the state's higher education ecosystem.
