Tripura to create a intelligence wing for forest protection

Agartala, May 1 (UNI) Tripura Forest Minister Animesh Debbarma proposed the creation of a separate intelligence unit like in the police along with armed personnel to prevent timber smuggling, destruction of forest, encroachment of forestland and poaching. It should be empowered to conduct raids, and actively monitor illegal activities, he added.
He said that the forest has become vulnerable due to illegal activities, and the situation appears to be challenging for the foresters. Besides collecting non-timber forest products and minor forest products for livelihood, smuggling, poaching, and human activities on protected forests have increased manifold in the state.
“A proposal for automated weapons has already been submitted to the state government for the next course of action, and if we can establish a robust 100-member armed task force, along with an intelligence wing, timber smuggling and illegal sand mining can be prevented substantially,” Debbarma said.
He stated that the forest department's hierarchical structure would undergo reforms similar to the Tripura Police, to ensure greater efficiency and discipline within the system, to strengthen forest protection and management of forest and biodiversity resources.
He distributed motorbikes across 58 forest ranges of the state, aiming to enhance mobility and efficiency in forest operations. He highlighted the critical role of modern equipment in ensuring a swift response to environmental challenges and conservation efforts.
The initiative aligns with broader environmental conservation goals, ensuring that forest staff have the mobility required to safeguard natural reserves and wildlife habitats effectively, the minister said.
“The distribution of motorbikes is expected to facilitate better patrolling, rapid intervention, and improved coordination among forest personnel,” he said.
