Rain, thunderstorms leave over 1,000 people homeless in Tripura

Agartala, May 13 (UNI) The pre-monsoon rain coupled with heavy thunderstorms and gusty winds wreaked havoc across Tripura in the past two days, displaced over 1,000 people and damaged 1,835 houses, said state disaster management officials here on Tuesday.
According to the report, West Tripura District was the worst-affected among the eight districts. Heavy rain and thunderstorms caused 51 houses to be fully damaged, 614 houses to be severely damaged, and 1,145 houses partly damaged in Mohanpur of West District,
The district administration has also opened four relief camps, and sheltered 455 persons from 153 families at Akhilacherra English Medium HS School, 175 persons from 68 families have taken shelter at Sankhala SB School, 150 persons from 49 families have taken shelter at Chandicherra SB School, and 211 persons from 65 families at Gayamani English Medium JB School.
In the Jirania Subdivision of West District, four houses were partly damaged; in Sepahijala District, two houses were severely damaged and two houses were partly damaged. In North Tripura's Dharmanagar Sub-division, a major road was blocked by a fallen tree, which was later cleared by Civil Defence volunteers. In Gomati district, five electric poles were damaged.
The Meteorological Centre in Agartala has issued an orange warning for the state, forecasting continued heavy rainfall, thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds over the next three days.
