New Delhi, Mar 28 (UNI) As soon as the proceedings started in the Rajya Sabha on Friday, the ruling party members created a ruckus over the comment of Samajwadi Party member Ramji Lal Suman on Rana Sanga, due to which the House was adjourned till 12 noon.
When the House assembled for the day, the ruling party members started raising slogans.
On this, Chairman Jagdeep Dhankhar "Honorable members, if we as members of this House express ourselves this way, irrespective of the gravity of the situation, then we are not contributing to evolution of peace in society. And we will have to introspect and reflect that in this House on sensitive issues, if we do not send our message of peace, tranquility then we will be failing in our duty".
“I wish to make it very clear that sentiment of the people is very precious. Similarly, dignity of the member of the House, his security, his prestige is equally important. I would appeal to all that what happened in the House was expunged for a simple reason. It was outrageous, unexpected of a member. But our problem because of technology is that whatever we expunge ie expunged only in our records. Social media gives traction to it..," he added.
we fail to contribute to peace & progress. On sensitive issues, we must introspect, ensuring our message upholds peace and tranquillity, or we risk failing in our duty -
Members of the ruling party began chanting slogans in protest against Suman's remarks about Rana Sanga.
Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju urged the Opposition to clarify its position on the matter, stating, "I do not believe that these opinions are solely those of Ramji Lal Suman."
In response, Opposition leader Mallikarjun Kharge stated that while they agree that no disrespectful remarks should be made, the actions taken in retaliation—such as individuals taking the law into their own hands and vandalising homes—are unacceptable. He emphasized that atrocities against Dalits would never be tolerated and asserted that the Constitution does not give anyone the right to engage in vandalism.
Pramod Tiwari of the Congress stated that Rana Sanga was a national hero. He pointed out that the Chairman had emphasized not repeating matters expunged from the records, yet the issue was still being brought up. He asserted that while they agree that no great figure from any caste or community should be insulted, using this as a pretext to vandalize and set fire to a Dalit's home is unacceptable.
Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal condemned Ramjilal Suman's remarks, calling them highly inappropriate and an insult to the nation's heroes. He stated that the comments were indecent and that not only the country, but the entire world was watching, emphasizing that such statements hurt people's sentiments.
Following this, the Chairman asked the SP MP to present his stance. However, members of the ruling party stood up and created a commotion, preventing Suman from speaking.
Amid the uproar, the Speaker adjourned the House until 12 noon.
