States step up emergency preparedness amid border tension

New Delhi, May 9 (UNI) In the wake of escalating tensions between India and Pakistan, several states have ramped up security measures and placed emergency services on a high alert to deal with any eventuality.

In Punjab, the state government has initiated a comprehensive review of emergency arrangements in the border districts. As per the Chief Minister's Office (CMO), ten cabinet ministers will head to various sensitive zones following a cabinet meeting later today. Their inspections will cover hospitals, fire services, ration supply, and other essential services.

Ministers Lal Chand Kataruchakk and Dr Ravjot Singh are assigned to Gurdaspur, while Kuldeep Dhaliwal and Mohinder Bhagat will oversee preparations in Amritsar.

Bihar BJP chief Dilip Jaiswal said the entire state is under heightened alert following directives from the Centre. "Bihar, particularly Purnia which borders both Bangladesh and Nepal, remains highly sensitive. The Chief Minister is scheduled to convene a comprehensive review of the security situation tomorrow. All officials, including those in police and health departments, have had their leaves cancelled. A follow-up review will be held in Raxaul day after tomorrow," he said.

Chhattisgarh Deputy Chief Minister Vijay Sharma, responding to last night’s reported drone incursion attempt by Pakistan in northern states, hailed the swift and effective action by the armed forces. "Our forces acted with extraordinary courage. When military bases are targeted, it is an act of war—Pakistan is also attacking civilians, which is unacceptable. This time, they have been completely outmatched. The growing discontent among Pakistan’s own people reflects their internal crisis. It's time to take a firm stand," he said in Raipur.

In Uttarakhand, all government hospitals have been directed to remain on high alert. The state's Health Secretary, Dr R Rajesh Kumar, said that under the guidance of the Union Health Ministry, hospitals have been instructed to ready 12,000 beds and ensure ICU units and ventilators are fully operational. All medical personnel have been ordered to report for duty with immediate effect.

Meanwhile, Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis is set to chair a high-level security review meeting in Mumbai today, which will be attended by top police and administrative officers.

In Andhra Pradesh, security agencies carried out a massive precautionary operation at Nellore Railway Station last night in the wake of the Pahalgam attack.

Railway DSP Muralidhar informed UNI that following instructions from the Director General of Police and Special Railway Protection Force, security checks were conducted from 9 pm to 11 pm on Thursday.

"We deployed around 100 personnel, including bomb detection and disposal squads, and six coordinated teams were formed. Checks were extended beyond railway premises to include hotels, lodges, and bus stands with the support of local police,” he said.

Dog squads, Government Railway Police (GRP), and local law enforcement participated in the drill, which covered all stations under the Nellore railway subdivision.
