Himachal airports shut amid security concerns

Shimla May 7 (UNI) Amid rising tensions along the India-Pakistan border, all civil flight operations at Himachal Pradesh’s three airports — Gaggal (Dharamshala), Kullu, and Shimla — have been suspended with immediate effect till May 9.

The decision is part of a wider suspension of civilian air traffic across several northern and western airports, reportedly taken as a precautionary measure amid the deteriorating security situation.

While no official explanation has been provided, the move is being seen as a sign of increased military alertness. Defence sources have indicated that the measure is aimed at maintaining operational readiness and minimizing civilian movement in vulnerable areas.

The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) is expected to issue further advisories, and airlines have been instructed to keep passengers informed of developments. Authorities have also appealed to the public to avoid unnecessary travel and remain in touch with airline helplines for rescheduling or refunds.

The sudden suspension has effectively cut off air connectivity to Himachal Pradesh, posing difficulties for tourists, locals, and business travellers. Himachal, which is currently in its peak tourist season, may see a dip in arrivals as uncertainty looms over the resumption of services.

Local administrations at all three affected airports are coordinating with airlines and ground transport services to manage stranded passengers. Emergency helplines have been activated to assist travellers with alternative arrangements.
