Himachal apple growers demand ban on Turkish imports over support to Pakistan

Shimla, May 11 (UNI) Amid escalating tensions between India and Pakistan, apple growers in Himachal Pradesh have called for a complete ban on imports from Turkey, accusing it of siding with Pakistan during the recent border escalation.
The demand has found resonance among political leaders and citizens alike, gaining traction as a matter of national sentiment and economic concern.
Harish Chauhan, President of the Himachal Pradesh Flower, Fruit and Vegetable Producers Association, said that Turkey’s growing export of apples to India has adversely impacted the domestic market, leading to unfair prices for Himachal's apple growers.
“Turkey has betrayed India by openly supporting Pakistan. In such a situation, trade agreements with it should be reviewed immediately, and imports of apples and other goods should be banned,” Chauhan asserted.
Echoing the sentiment, Congress national spokesperson and MLA from Theog, Kuldeep Singh Rathore, said, “India extended a helping hand during Turkey’s crisis by launching ‘Operation Dost’ following the devastating earthquake.
"We sent NDRF teams, drones, and essential supplies. But instead of showing gratitude, Turkey has provided military support to Pakistan. This is a betrayal.”
Rathore called for an immediate review of all trade ties with Turkey and urged citizens to boycott Turkish products and tourism.
Meanwhile, in a separate development to support local agriculture, the state government has declared Pangi in Chamba district as Himachal’s first natural farming sub-division.
A special Farmer Producer Organization (FPO) will be set up to support farmers practicing natural farming, with Rs 5 crore allocated as a revival fund. The government will also procure naturally grown barley from the region at an MSP of Rs 60 per kg, aiming to boost rural income and promote chemical-free farming practices.
The dual developments — a call for embargo on Turkish imports and a push for sustainable agriculture — reflect both economic nationalism and a shift toward environmentally responsible farming in Himachal Pradesh.
