Farmers, citizens protest eviction and land issues across HP

Shimla/Joginder Nagar, Apr 28 (UNI) Farmers, apple growers, and citizens across Himachal Pradesh staged massive protests against eviction and land-related issues on Monday, demanding ownership rights, action against drug menace, better healthcare, and timely MNREGA payments.
In Shimla, the Himachal Kisan Sabha, Apple Producer Association, and Shimla Nagarik Sabha held a sit-in protest outside the DC office. Hundreds of people participated, including Kuldeep Singh Tanwar, Vijendra Mehra, Jagat Ram, Falma Chauhan, Jaishiv Thakur, Vivek Kashyap and Jagmohan Thakur.
Addressing the gathering, State Kisan Sabha President Tanwar said farmers have been fighting for years against eviction. He criticized the government for displacing farmers cultivating small patches of government land while failing to provide employment.
Tanwar recalled that during the state's Prem Kumar Dhumal government in 2002, farmers were asked to pay Rs 50 for the regularisation of 20 bighas, but cases were later filed against them instead. He demanded that the government convene an all-party meeting to press for amendments to the Forest Conservation Act, 1980, and stop evictions by filing an affidavit in court.
Vivek Kashyap from Shimla Nagarik Sabha condemned the demolition of huts and eviction of readymade stall owners. He accused the government of failing to fulfill its manifesto promises of providing 2 biswa land to landless city residents, instead opting to demolish poor people's shelters.
State Secretary of Janwadi Mahila Samiti, Falma Chauhan, said both the BJP and Congress governments have betrayed the homeless by issuing demolition notices after elections. She called for unity among the poor and farmers to launch a statewide movement against evictions.
Meanwhile, in Joginder Nagar, the Chauntra Zone Committee of the Kisan Sabha, under the leadership of Kushal Bhardwaj, held a large procession and dharna, raising demands to stop evictions, curb drug abuse, fill vacant doctor posts at Joginder Nagar Hospital and Chauntra CHC, and ensure immediate payment of MNREGA wages withheld for six months.
Protesters also condemned the recent terrorist attack on tourists in Pahalgam, demanding strict punishment for the culprits and an investigation into the security lapse.
The Kisan Sabha announced plans to intensify protests across the state, with a major farmers' and labourers' protest scheduled for May 20. UNI ML SSP
