Srinagar, Apr 12 (UNI) Peoples Democratic Party chief Mehbooba Mufti on Saturday wrote to West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin, and Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, thanking them for their “courageous and principled” opposition to the Waqf Amendment Act.
In identical letters to three Chief Ministers, Mehbooba accused the ruling dispensation at the Centre of promoting a “majoritarian tide” that endangers India’s foundational values of plurality and diversity.
“While most citizens reject this agenda those promoting hatred and division now hold power targeting our Constitution, institutions and secular fabric. Minorities particularly Muslims, have borne the brunt - most recently through the arbitrary enforcement of new Waqf laws which undermine our religious freedoms,” she wrote.
Mehbooba linked the recent Waqf Act to a broader pattern of systemic injustice, recalling the abrogation of Article 370 and the bifurcation of Jammu and Kashmir as key examples of what she termed the “systemic erosion of rights.”
“In these dark times, your courage and clarity have been a rare beacon of hope. Alongside a few principled voices you've stood up for justice and for the inclusive idea of India,” she said.
“ I write to express my deep respect and the gratitude of many who feel voiceless and marginalized. With your continued support and leadership I'm confident we can reclaim our constitutional values and shared future,” PDP chief added.
The Waqf Act has drawn sharp criticism from almost all the major political parties in J&K with two of them National Conference and Apni party knocking the door of Supreme Court.
