Chennai, Apr 3 (UNI) Terming the passage of the Waqf (Amendment) Bill in the Lok Sabha in the early hours of Thursday as an affront on the Indian Constitution, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister and DMK President M K Stalin told the State Assembly that the DMK would move the Supreme Court against this.
Making a statement in the Assembly on Thursday, he recalled the resolution adopted in the State Assembly on March 27 urging the Centre to completely withdraw the Amendment Bill, which was
an act of attempting to disrupt communal harmony.
Stating that the DMK members are taking part in the House proceedings today by wearing black badges as a mark of protest, Mr Stalin said a petition against the passage of the Waqf Amendment Bill would be filed in the Supreme Court on behalf of the DMK.
"Tamil Nadu will fight, fight, fight and will win it", he said, adding the Waqf Amendment Bill will destroy
and undermine the religious autonomy of the Muslim community.
Expressing his strong condemnations on passage of the Bill in Lok Sabha despite strong objections from the Opposition parties, Mr Stalin said 232 members have voted against it, while 288 have voted in support of it.
Though the Bill was passed, the fact that 232 members had voted against it was not an ordinary number and the numbers could have been even more.
"The Bill should not only be opposed, but it should be completely withdrawn. This is our view", he said and recalled the resolution adopted in the Assembly in this regard.
The passage of the Bill with the support of some alliance parties, despite strong objections by a majority of the Opposition parties at 2.00 am early in the morning, was an affront on the Indian Constitution and an act of destroying communal harmony, he added.
