Police said T Devendran (17), hailing from Ariyanayagipuram village, was travelling in the bus from his village to the government-aided higher secondary school at Tirunelveli, where he is studying, when the armed gang waylaid the bus at the Kattiammalpuram area this morning.
The gang pulled Devendran out of the bus and hacked him indiscriminately with sickles in full public view.

After attacking the student, the gang escaped from the spot on motorcycles.
The student suffered multiple cut injuries, including on the head, hands, legs, and abdomen.
He was rushed to the government hospital at Srivaikuntam and then shifted to Tirunelveli government medical college hospital, where his condition is stated to be critical.
On being informed, Srivaikuntam Deputy Superintendent of Police Ramakrishnan rushed to the spot and held an inquiry.
Preliminary investigations revealed that there was enmity between Devendran and another group over playing a Kabaddi game.
Meanwhile, tension prevailed at Tirunelveli Government Medical College Hospital, as a large number of relatives of the victim assembled and staged a protest demanding immediate arrest of the assailants involved in the attack.
Policemen were deployed in and around the hospital to maintain law and order.
