LVPEI secures Australian patent for novel corneal therapy

Hyderabad, Mar 13 (UNI) The L V Prasad Eye Institute (LVPEI), Hyderabad, has received an Australian patent for a groundbreaking stem cell therapy designed to treat vision loss caused
by corneal scarring and distention.

Developed by Dr Sayan Basu and Dr Vivek Singh, the innovative therapy utilizes stem cells from the eye's surface to repair damaged corneas. This patented cell composition combines limbal epithelial and stromal cells to address corneal diseases, providing a promising alternative to corneal transplants, a statement said on Thursday.

The therapy, which previously received an Indian patent, is undergoing clinical trials approved by the Government of India. While further validation is required before it becomes available for patient use, the therapy holds potential in treating conditions like keratoconus by strengthening and replenishing corneal collagen.

Dr Singh described the achievement as India's first Australian patent for a stromal stem cell-based therapy targeting corneal scars.
Dr. Basu highlighted its potential to revolutionize treatment options for various corneal conditions if clinical trials prove successful.

This innovation offers hope for patients in low- and middle-income countries where corneal blindness is prevalent.
