Kharge slams Modi over third-party 'ceasefire'

Kalaburagi, May 12 (UNI) Senior Congress leader and Karnataka minister Priyank Kharge on Monday lashed out at the Narendra Modi-led government at the Centre, terming the 'ceasefire' announcement by a third country a 'diplomatic failure' and demanding immediate convening of Parliament and an all-party meeting to discuss the ongoing security situation.
Speaking to media, Kharge expressed concern that the ceasefire, which followed a statement by the President of the United States, was announced without any clarity from the Indian government. "Who is controlling the foreign policy of this country?" he asked, accusing the Prime Minister, the National Security Advisor, and the External Affairs Minister of failing to uphold India's strategic interests.
Kharge praised the Indian Army for its "brilliant job" in dealing with Pakistan, but criticised the political leadership for failing to prevent the International Monetary Fund (IMF) from releasing a USD 2.5 billion loan to Islamabad. "Despite our brave soldiers' efforts, the government failed to gather international support or stop funding to Pakistan," he said.
He also questioned the Prime Minister’s absence from the public sphere during the crisis. "The Prime Minister had time to tell children how to write exams during COVID-19 and asked people to clap and bang thalis. But today, when the country needs him most, he is missing," Kharge remarked.
Demanding accountability, Kharge said the Prime Minister and his Cabinet must immediately convene an all-party meeting and call a special session of Parliament. "The people have a right to know what is happening. Where are the terrorists? Have they been captured or have they retreated? They came 50 km into Indian territory and there is no clarity," he said.
Stating that the opposition is ready to stand united with the government on any decisive action in national interest, Kharge emphasised that foreign policy cannot be conducted in secrecy and must be debated in Parliament.
